When I first heard that Oprah and Steven Spielberg were going to recreate The Color Purple. I had to ask myself, is this necessary? Sometimes we should “leave well enough alone.” Can anything be better than the original? My answer is no, I have seen the movie dozens of times, read the book by Alice Walker, and seen the Broadway play. After a day and calming down a little, I started thinking well what about the next generation? They may need to see the recreation of the movie to learn the life lessons that I learned from the film. Then when I heard it is going to be a musical, my stomach knotted with fury and fear of losing a great memory of my childhood! A musical! How will this generation and the next take the movie seriously if his going to be adapted into a musical? Really! I picture poor Black folks dancing and singing throughout the film. The only thing I hope for is that Oprah knows better than this. I am sure it will all work out in the end. Black folks have been robbed of so much and I just want this classic memory to stay in tact.
