Sports Illustrated Sportsperson Of The Year Serena Williams Gives Back

Today is Sports Saturdays over here at the PBW blog so thanks for stopping by. On Saturdays, we celebrate the generosity of the sports figures that we’ve grown to love and admire for their philanthropy.

Serena Williams is the PBW pick to celebrate today. She says on her website that she “understands and is honored by the rare opportunity she has … to assist others through monetary donations, lending a voice, and/or working in partnership with existing nonprofit organizations in both the United States and around the world.”

It is wonderful when a celebrity figure of any kind understands how their celebrity can be used to make a difference. Serena uses this “rare” opportunity to prevent community violence, improve race relations, and remove inequities in the legal and education system.

In the past year, the Serena Williams has assisted 10 individuals attend college through the Beyond the Boroughs National Scholarship Fund. According to the scholarship’s website, the fund will help students who have the drive to succeed but even with loans and other grants still fall short of reaching their dream to attend college. Applications will be taken starting January 2016. Scholarships up to $20,000 over four years will be awarded to full-time students who have been accepted to an accredited four-year college, university, or equivalent (culinary school, for example). Applicants can be current high school seniors entering college in the fall or students currently attending a college or university.
